Aneignungen (occupations) is an investigation of self-built habitats in Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris. Known for both its Basilica and the National Stadium, Saint Denis is fragmented by highways leading to the centre of Paris and a canal dating back to its former industrial past. At the Porte de Paris, the highways, its exits and the canal enclose areas that remain unnoticed by the surrounding city. Like small islands between the flows of cars, these spaces are being occupied. Small houses appeared, making use of the existing infrastructures. These utopias reinterpret the existing spaces of anonymous and unvalued structures, showing an alternative beauty and ingenuity. Our work is an observation and collection of these occupations in both drawings and photographs. For the Ancona Biennale we intend to show enlarged photographs and drawings of these alternative habitats in a spatial arrangement.
